IKEA MALM Dresser Dupes on Amazon

The MALM's plain, handle-free white drawers, now that IKEA has dropped it in the US: Amazon look-alikes ranked by how close they get, and what each gives up.

The original

IKEA MALM 6-Drawer Dresser

IKEA's best-known dresser: six flat drawers behind a clean white front, now gone from IKEA's US range.

Particleboard and fiberboard under a white paint finish, with routed edges for pulls instead of handles. It was recalled in 2016 over tip-over deaths, and it's only safe anchored to the wall.

IKEA's replacement is the STORKLINTA, whose drawers won't open fully until it's anchored to the wall.

Questions

Is IKEA discontinuing the MALM dresser?

In the US, yes: it's no longer on IKEA's US site, and IKEA has said its MALM dressers are being discontinued by the end of 2026. Its replacement is the STORKLINTA, whose drawers won't open fully until it's anchored to the wall.

Why was the MALM recalled?

In 2016 IKEA recalled about 29 million MALM and other chests and dressers because, unanchored, they could tip over onto a child. Owners were told to anchor them to the wall or return them.

Are these dressers safe?

Dressers sold in the US since September 2023 have to pass federal stability tests and come with a kit to anchor them to the wall. Use it: any dresser is safest anchored, especially in a child's room.
